Synopsis

Discover the educational reformer who shaped thinking about school leadership, character, and the moral purpose of education.

This volume examines Arnold of Rugby and his lasting influence on how teachers guide boys, balance discipline with character, and connect schooling to larger moral aims. Drawing on his sermons, letters, and other writings, the book situates his ideas in the broader history of education and argues for a practical, practice‑based science of teaching.

  • Learn how Arnold linked schooling to the development of character and moral insight.
  • Explore how the teacher–pupil relationship, school government, and everyday practice shape outcomes.
  • See why the author treats education as a three‑part inquiry: nature of education, the role of religion, and the use of didactic and practical methods.
  • Understand the editor’s aim to translate historical ideas into usable guidance for today’s teachers and school leaders.
Ideal for students of educational history, current teachers, and anyone curious about the roots of modern school leadership.

Présentation de l'éditeur

Rugby and England were left poorer by the death of Thomas A rnold; his lifetime was largely spent in warfare, and after his death, although many praised him, some held that he was overpraised. But now at the close of the century on which he has left his impress, we can scarcely err in regarding the common opinion of the world as likely to prove the settled verdict of posterity. I have taken some trouble to seek a formulation of this verdict from various quarters and I gather that the final value to be set on Arnold slife is in the example of a thoroughly righteous man, a picture of sincerity and truth; a man also who was not content to be righteous for himself, but was inflamed with zeal in the cause of righteousness. This, of course, was not all, and herein he was not alone; happily for his age, many others in less exalted station exhibited the same saving quality; but it was this energetic untiring devotion to an ideal that touched with new life the various fields of activity to which he was called. Let it be admitted that some of Arnold sopinions were erroneous, or that he lacked the signs of original genius, the fact remains that his moral insight, aided by the school of culture and refinement in which he was trained, made this schoolmaster dunng some twelve years a power of the first order in three very different directions in the Church, in Historical Research, and in Education.

Présentation de l'éditeur

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.
