Immigrant hardship and moral tests collide in a dramatic tale of resilience. In this novel, Isaac Schwartz, a once‑prosperous man, confronts poverty, pride, and the weight of others’ judgments as he seeks a path forward.
The story pulls you into a world of Jewish life in Bavaria and later in a new land, where family bonds, religious expectations, and harsh social laws shape every choice. Through intimate vignettes, you’ll see a man who battles indecision, the sting of a derogatory label, and a race against time to improve his family’s fate.
Ideal for readers who enjoy historical fiction that explores faith, community, and moral choices under pressure.

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.
If he has a message to the world, his characters cannot always be of his own choosing, but are determined by a power stronger than caprice. The desire to add to the worlds knowledge of a peculiar people, to portray characters but little known and frequently misunderstood, to analyze a creed at variance with the prevailing faith, have influenced the choice of my subject. My heroes and heroines are humble folk, with intensely human characteristics, with sterling qualities and corresponding shortcomings, and I introduce them to the reader without praise or apology.
(Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.)
