Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This early 20th century rural economics text provided a practical guide to farmers and agricultural reformers interested in using the cooperative movement to create a more equitable and democratic rural economy. The author makes the case that farmers and their supporters have the intellectual, moral, and strategic advantages necessary to not only produce agricultural goods, but to also fully participate in processing, marketing, and distributing those goods to consumers. The author argued that farmers had to move beyond individualistic, competitive farming practices to a cooperative model that would allow them to reap the profits of their labor at every stage of the supply chain. He advocated for the use of purchasing cooperatives to acquire farm supplies; cooperative marketing to standardize and increase the leverage farmers had over pricing; cooperative production enterprises, such as mills and creameries, to allow farmers to profit from secondary processing of their products; rural credit societies to provide loans at fair interest to farmers; and insurance societies to allow farmers to pool risk and lower the cost of coverage. Each chapter of the book provides case studies of farmers who used cooperative methods to achieve these goals.
