Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book celebrates the British constitution as one of the greatest achievements of human wisdom, a triumph that has taken centuries to refine and perfect. The author begins with Henry I and Stephen, who, needing to strengthen their tenuous claims to the English throne, passed two different charters in favor of their subjects. This book examines how the vices and weaknesses of King John gave the high-spirited English Barons an opportunity to acquire the famous Magna Carta from that prince. The author also investigates how the ambition of Simon de Montfort, Earl of Leicester, in the reign of Henry III, gave rise to the House of Commons. Furthermore, this text sheds light on how the long, drawn-out wars between the houses of York and Lancaster reduced the power of the crown and confirmed the liberties of the people. After the union of the two houses, though the princes of the family of Tudor were arbitrary, the revival of learning and the reformation of religion were favorable to both religious and civil liberty. After the accession of the house of Stuart, the absurd pretensions of James I and the evil counsels given to his son (who deserved a better fate) prepared the way for that revolution, which the bigotry and arbitrary measures of James II rendered both expedient and necessary. The author encourages readers to learn from the past to secure greater liberty and happiness for the future and highlights that the British Constitution remains one of the greatest efforts of human wisdom, an enduring testament to the power of collaboration and compromise.
