Excerpt from Materials for a Flora of Formosa: Supplementary Notes to the Enumeratio Plantarum Formosanarum and Flora Montana Formosæ, Based on a Study of the Collections of the Botanical Survey of the Government of Formosa, Principally Made at the Herbarium of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew
To mention the number of species of the flora'34 of the island, known to us up to the present time, there are, in the Enumeratio, 1999 species belonging to 701 genera and 153 families. In my Flora. Montana, 392 species are mentioned belonging to 266 genera and 70 families; in the present work, I have mentioned 785 species belonging to 843 genera and 109 families, thus adding to our present knowledge of Formosan flora, 567 species, 72 genera and 2 families. Excluding all these species which appear for a second or third time, in the above three papers, the total number of the plants of the island is 2660 species belonging to 836 genera and 156 families. The following list shows genera added to those mentioned in our former publications. Most of them are new to the flora of the island. Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book presents an in-depth examination of materials used in a Flora of Formosa, Supplementary Notes to the Enumeratio Plantarum Formosanarum and Flora Montanae Formosae, based on a study of the collections of the Botanical Survey of the Government of Formosa, principally made at the Herbarium of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. The author compares the collections that were sent to him for determination with specimens from the two countries above mentioned. For a comparison with Japanese specimens, the Herbarium at Tokyo where nearly all Japanese plants are housed, was visited, and Chinese plants, although represented only very poorly, were also examined. The Flora of Formosa has a close affinity to the floras of Japan and China, and it was, therefore, very important, in order to work up the materials, to make an exhaustive comparison of the collections preserved in the principal herbaria of the west. This was done in the herbaria at Paris, Dahlem, and St. Petersburg. The author also felt it very necessary to visit the herbaria at Kew and at Dahlem where a good many collections of Asiatic flora are preserved. During his work, many of the species of the collections were represented in the Chinese herbarium at Kew, and also among the specimens from other regions. This book is an exhaustive supplement bringing our former publications up-to-date. Several species are mentioned under families different from those to which they are referred in the former publications. As the alteration of families is a matter of importance, the author has commented briefly on this point. The book also discusses genera added to those mentioned in our former publications. Most of them are new to the flora of the island. The author also discusses three species which are properly transferred from one family to another. The book concludes by discussing the significance of the insights on the main subject. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
