Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book, an 1851 sermon by Reverend J.M. Peck, addresses the widespread misconstruction of scripture in support of what the author calls "higher law" argumentsâ"those that maintain that the religious significance of the Bible makes it superior to the Constitution and other laws. Opposing the abolitionist movement of the time, the author argues that the Bible explicitly instructs citizens to obey the government and that doing so does not violate religious freedom. These arguments are situated in the context of American religious history and the dominant Puritan beliefs of the time, which held that the church should rule the state. The author argues that true religious freedom can only exist in a system where church and state are separate and that higher law arguments blur this vital distinction, potentially leading to the collapse of law and order as well as personal freedoms.
