A imoiTQH I have tried to make this book enjoyable, and keep it alive to the qualities oi its subject, nqr prevailing pvtrpoee has been scientific. So far as tbe present tedmique of psychology permits of solutions, I have tried to sdive the problem ci humorous lioghter. And if I have taken one valid step toward diat section, it will please my purpose better than any amount oi the success that mit be called literary. The rdaticm between science and the literature of generalities seems to me to be one of the great problems of the future. For science is developing so technical and special a body of knowledge upon every subject imder the sun, that only an expert can know anytiutig substantial of what is to be known about it. And yet literary men with no real training in science oontinue to pretend that thqr know something, if not everything, about all subjects. Thqr write essays upon general pro Uems with the same tree joy of sdfeqmssion with whidi th write stories or poems about particular things or experiences. And these es Bwhile th may stimulate the reader and give hhn a fine sense of mental companionship, are very Ukdy to be in flat contradiction to some method or resalt that scientific men have already humbly and conscientioudy verified in which case they certainly be kng to tbe second and not the first order of human values.

About the Publisher
Forgotten Books is a publisher of historical writings, such as: Philosophy, Classics, Science, Religion, History, Folklore and Mythology.
Forgotten Books' Classic Reprint Series utilizes the latest technology to regenerate facsimiles of historically important writings. Careful attention has been made to accurately preserve the original format of each page whilst digitally enhancing the aged text.
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

It delves into the history of humor theories, critically analyzing them from the standpoint of the author's own theory. The author argues that humor is not merely a by-product of other emotions, but rather an intrinsic part of the human experience. Drawing on a wide range of examples, the book explores the role of humor in our social interactions, our understanding of truth, and our perception of absurdity. It also examines the relationship between humor and hostility, sexuality, and other primal instincts.
