Excerpt from The Works of Shakespeare
It is impossible within any reasonable limit to follow Fleay through his detailed examination of the play. I shall therefore content myself with stating what seem to me the more important points of his criticism, and with explaining how far I am able to accept his conclusions.

This book scrutinizes Shakespeare's tragedy of Timon of Athens, suggesting that elements of the play are not Shakespeare's own work but the additions of a lesser writer, possibly a theatre company actor or playwright hired to pad out the incomplete work and tailor it to fit the tastes of the audience of the day. The author supports this theory with detailed analysis of the play's language, style and metre, indicating significant inconsistencies in certain portions of the text. The analysis also highlights scenes which appear to serve no discernible purpose except to provide opportunity for crude humour and physical action, further suggesting that these were inserted by someone other than the original playwright. Specifically, the author argues that the play's misanthropic tone, evident in the inconsistent and improbable character of Timon himself, particularly in his sudden and unexplained turn from an extraordinarily generous to a wholly embittered man, is the result of these later additions, and that Shakespeare's original conception was more nuanced and psychologically realistic. The book thus offers insights into the collaborative and often chaotic nature of theatre in Shakespeare's time, and the challenges involved in accurately attributing authorship of a work that has been altered over time. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item. N° de réf. du vendeur 9781330711781_0
