Synopsis

Excerpt from The Truth About Sweet Clover: Its Value for Honey, for Plowing Under, as a Fertilizer of the Soil, and Food for Horses, Cattle, Swine, Sheep, and as a Valuable Plant for the Introduction of Nitrogen-Gathering Bacteria

Mr. Root - When you get out a new circular I wish you would cut out the statement that this station has ever classed sweet clover as a noxious weed. Away back in 1877-78, I called attention, through Farm and Fireside, in an article which was copied generally in the agricultural press, to the fact that this plant grows only where noth ing else will grow, and appears to be designed as a reno vetor of exhausted soils. I have never permitted it to be classed as a noxious weed while in control of this station. Chas. E. Thorne, Director.

Présentation de l'éditeur

I ntroduction. This second edition of our booklet on sweet clover consists chiefly of a compilation of articles and items appearing at different times in Gleanings in Bee Culture and other farm papers, giving the experience of the writers with sweet clover, which is every year becoming better known and valued by the farmer and stock-raiser. Mr. Frank Coyerdale, of Delmar, I owa, has had wide experience in growing this clover, and you will find a number of articles from his pen in the following pages. He has prepared the brief statement following this introduction, giving in a nutshell the necessary information for preparing the soil, seeding, and cutting the hay, and saving the seed. A number of excellent publications have appeared in the past year or two devoted to the subject of weet clover, which we take pleasure in commending because of the valuable information which they give. We call special attention to Farmers Bulletin No. 485, price 10 cts., on sweet clover, by Mr. Wistgate, issued by the United States Department of A piculture, Washington, D. C. This first appeared in March, 1912. The Ohio Experiment Station has also issued an exhaustive bulletin on sweet clover, available to residents of this State, and written with special reference to conditions in Ohio. The Value of Sweet Clover, by J. F. Sims, is the title of a 60-page book in cloth cover, issued by the A. A. Berry Seed Co., Clarinda, I owa. This is a very concise and readable book, enthusiastically written, which will well repay any one, at all interested, to read. The price, $1.00, seems rather high for so small a book.
