Présentation de l'éditeur

The following study of the Master of the Offices is an attempt to throw more light upon the intricate administrative system obtaining in the Later Roman and Byzantine Empires through a detailed treatment of the history and scope of one particular office. It is a development of work done in connection with a doctoral thesis on the Roman Magistri, some of the results of which are incorporated in the first chapter. For directing his attention to the Late Roman and Byzantine field of historical research, as well as for constant guidance and suggestion in the preparation of this monograph, the writers special acknowledgments are due to Professor W. S. Ferguson, of Harvard University. He is further under great obligation to Mr. William H. Murphy, of Detroit, whose generosity has made the publication of this study possible. ARTHUR E. R. BOAK. Présentation de l'éditeur

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the intricate workings of the Later Roman and Byzantine Empires, offering a comprehensive exploration of the "Master of the Offices," a unique and multifaceted role within the imperial administration. Unlike other officials with clearly defined responsibilities, the Master of the Offices held a diverse range of powers, overseeing palace guards, secretarial departments, state arsenals, and even ceremonial duties. The author meticulously traces the evolution of this office from its obscure beginnings under Emperor Diocletian to its rise as one of the most influential positions in the Empire, and finally, its gradual decline into an honorary title. Through this historical journey, the book sheds light on the broader transformations within the Roman administrative system, particularly the shift towards centralized bureaucracy and the intricate interplay of power dynamics at the imperial court. Exploring the responsibilities, privileges, and historical significance of the Master of the Offices, the book provides valuable insights into the complexities of governance, courtly life, and the mechanisms of power in the late Roman and Byzantine world. The author's meticulous research and engaging narrative offer a compelling lens through which to understand the enduring legacy of this unique office and its impact on the course of history.
