The story begins aboard the Rampatina passenger ship, eleven days and a half out from Liverpool. A pilot-yacht approaches, bearing the pilot whose job it is to take the vessel up the river. Aboard the Rampatina, a Second Officer introduces himself to a young man acting as an emissary of the press. The young man quizzes the Second Officer about the voyage, the weather, and the various events that have occurred during the journey, including the loss of an elephant. Through the course of their conversation, the Second Officer reveals that the elephant was a passenger on the ship, owned by an American chewing-gum king, and that the animal died of seasickness. The Second Officer also tells the reporter that the elephant had been attended by a nurse during its illness, and that she showed great devotion to the animal. The elephant's demise took its toll on the other animals aboard the ship, who became distressed and noisy, causing an upsetting atmosphere for the passengers and crew.
