The trend of fiction running in the line of works upon the early scenes in our countrys history has probably been the incentive that has brought to light the pages of this book. We have had no diary of by-gone days, but we have gleaned from musty records, out of print in the first half of the past century. Histories of the present day as well as those of early date, have lent their aid in securing data, and where such occurs we have given credit. They have also furnished us scenes and characters familiar to all readers of their pages. The period through which our story extends antedates that of the Revolution by over a quarter of a century, although some of our characters figured conspicuously in that great struggle for free dom.
