A sweeping look at how ancient trade shaped the world and the Holy Land. This work traces the birth of navigation, the rise of maritime commerce, and the enduring connections between continents that helped forge civilizations. Rich in historical detail, it explores how early traders and explorers—from Phoenicians to Arabian caravans—built the routes that linked East and West, and how modern bets on new trade corridors echo those ancient ambitions.
From the dawn of commerce to the rise of great ports, you’ll encounter:
- The origins of navigation and the transformation of travel into sustained trade routes.
- A survey of early trading powers, especially the Phoenicians, and their influence on global exchange.
- The idea that geography and route choice can reshape economies and nations.
- Debates about ancient sources and the geography of the East, including Ophir and Arabia.
Ideal for readers of history, economic thought, and maritime lore who want a thoughtful look at how trade routes, technology, and policy intersect to shape civilizations.

This pamphlet, sent forth at the instance of others, is accompanied with the single hope, that it may elicit a spirit of inquiry and discussion among intelligent men. Written only for delivery, without an idea of publication, few of the authorities consulted in the preparation of the lecture were noted down, but, as far as memory serves, those not quoted in the text, are named in the Note to the Eeader, at the end. One thing he has not dwelt upon in the text, which may, to many, be the most attractive feature the great probability of an abundance of gold lying in the projected route across A rabia. Rosenmiillar, in his Biblical Botany, states that the ancient Hebrews obtained their gold chiefly from A rabia, and Strabo, quoting A rtemidors, says that a river of A rabia carries gold sand in its stream, and that gold, requiring little purification, is found in small pieces, the smallest of the size of a grain of wheat, the middling as big as a meddlar, and the largest like a nut. And Diodorus Siculus declares, that there is found in A rabia pure, native gold, of the size of a chestnut and of a brilliant lustre; and speaking of the river Lib., xvi., chap. 3, 5,18. Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book explores the history and potential of trade routes between the East and the West, with a particular focus on the role of the Persian Gulf as a central hub. The author delves into the ancient origins of trade in the region, tracing its development from the time of the Phoenicians to the present day. The author also examines the impact of various political and technological changes on the flow of trade, including the rise and fall of empires, the development of new shipping technologies, and the opening of the Suez Canal. Ultimately, the book argues that the Persian Gulf is poised to once again become a major center of global trade, with implications for the economies and political dynamics of both the East and the West.
