Born in 65 B.C. into the tumultuous era of the Roman Republic, Horace was witness to and an active participant in one of the most significant periods of Roman history. At the tender age of 21, propelled by his fatherâs sacrifices, Horace arrived in Athens to further his education only to be abruptly called away when civil war broke out. Following the assassination of Julius Caesar in 44 B.C., Horace (much to his chagrin) was conscripted into the army of Brutus and Cassius only to flee the battlefield at Philippi on hearing rumors of a rout. Fast forward to 31 B.C. after the ascension of Octavian, later Augustus Caesar. Rome has begun to enjoy a period of relative peace. During this time we find Horace amicably immersed in literary circles, making connections with key players such as Virgil and Maecenas, the latter of whom played a vital role in Horaceâs career. Through Maecenas, Horace was introduced to Emperor Augustus who was so impressed by him that he offered Horace a secretarial position (which Horace wisely declined) and bestowed upon him a small estate that gave him the financial security to focus on his new passion: poetry. This book presents a detailed analysis of Horaceâs writings, the bulk of which were produced during this period of his life and are divided into four distinct books of Odes, Satires, and Epodes. While all are significant for their influence on later generations of poets, it is the four books of Odes, in particular, that established Horaceâs reputation as a literary master.
