Excerpt from Characteristics of Literature: Illustrated by the Genius of Distinguished Men
The habitude of observation, the recognition of the world as a suggestive as well as a merely physical sphere; the consciousness of life as an experience full of significance, is everywhere obvious in Browne. The world, he says, was made to be inhabited by beasts, but studied and contemplated by man it is the debt of our reason we owe unto God and the homage we pay for not being beasts. The wisdom of God receives small honour from those vulgar heads that rudely stare about, and with a gross rusticity admire his works; those highly magnify him whose judicious inquiry into his acts and deliberate research into his creatures, return the duty of a devout and learned admiration. To raise so beauteous a strue ture as the world and the creatures thereof, was but his art, but their sundry and divided operations with their predestined ends, are from the treasury of his wisdom.

This volume consists of critical literary portraits, examining the chief phases of the literary character from both a historical and contemporary perspective, offering fresh insights into the lives of classic authors. The author argues that philosophers, like poets, should be seen as deriving their mandate from nature. They are characterized as liberal and inquiring, reasoning upon facts and deriving keen delight from the pursuit of truth. The book adopts as its basis the Religio Medici, a private compendium of individual faith, which reveals the author's noble and original mind. The author's analyses inspire recognition of the world as a suggestive and meaningful sphere, where life is an experience rich in significance. Through a combination of reliance upon broad principles and general views with recognition of particular dogmas, the truly philosophic approach is distinguished from the merely pedantic and sectarian. This book provides a valuable resource for readers seeking a deeper understanding of the nature of philosophy, the lives of major philosophers, and the enduring relevance of their ideas.
