Synopsis

Explore how we know what is real. This accessible introduction traces the long history of knowledge, from ancient discussions to modern thought, and shows how theories of truth, belief, and reality fit together in everyday thinking.

In this book, you’ll see how perception, memory, and reasoning interact in the search for what is true. It analyzes the roles of experience, logic, and value, and explains how ideas about knowledge have evolved through the work of Protagoras, Plato, and later thinkers like William James. The result is a clear map of how we justify our beliefs and how truth can be understood as a practical, tested process rather than a purely abstract ideal.

  • Does perception alone hold the key to knowledge, or do we need systematic thinking?

  • How do memory, expectation, and value shape our judgments about truth?

  • What is pragmatism, and how does it affect how we approach science, religion, and everyday questions?

  • How can we distinguish genuine knowledge from mere seeming in a finite, changing world?

Ideal for readers seeking a solid, nontechnical introduction to epistemology, this edition helps you understand how the theory of knowledge connects with science, philosophy, and everyday life. It’s suitable for students and curious general readers alike who want a thoughtful overview without heavy jargon.

Présentation de l'éditeur

While we have pretentious works covering the field of logic and epistemology, we are not so well supplied with books giving a general survey of the main problems involved in the investigation of truth. The time seems peculiarly ripe for such an effort. In the bewildering amount of discussion and misunderstanding to which the pragmatic movement has led, there is need for fresh emphasis of the main issues. There is also need for building out the pragmatic theory hi neglected directions. In a small way, this book tries to serve both purposes. This book is intended to be used in connection with a course in elementary logic or as an introduction or sequel to it. It is hoped that its human interest will also make it available for the general philosophic reader and as an introduction to philosophy. To the cultured public, not technically trained in philosophy, the first and the last chapters may be of special interest. My relation to the pragmatic movement will be clear enough in the course of the text. It may be of interest that the larger part of Chapter XVII, The Reality of Religious I deals, was given as a lecture at Harvard in 1899, practically before the movement had started.
