Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book is a wonderfully varied memoir that offers the reader a fascinating glimpse of 19th-century military and high society. The author, born in 1849, was the son of a clergyman and came from a military family, with several of his brothers and uncles serving in the Army. The author himself joined the military at a young age and spent 18 months at Sandhurst, during which time he made many friends. After passing out, he was gazetted to the Second Queen's Royals and joined them in Ireland, where he enjoyed a pleasant time, taking part in dog-fighting and socialising with his fellow officers. The author's reminiscences provide an insight into the social and military life of the period. He recalls meeting famous figures such as the Tichborne claimant and the astronomer, Lord Rosse. He also discusses the issue of gambling in the Army and the different types of money lenders who targeted young officers. The book offers a unique perspective on the experiences of a young man growing up in a military family during the Victorian era. It sheds light on the realities of military life, the challenges faced by young officers, and the social and cultural context of the time.
