Unlock the story told by ancient letters on papyrus. This book shows how scholars read Greek handwriting to date manuscripts, trace styles, and understand the world that wrote them. It blends clear explanation with vivid examples to bring palaeography to life.
Inside you’ll find practical guidance on recognizing letter shapes, comparing hands from different periods, and using facsimiles to study historic texts. The work highlights key hands from the Herculaneum and Oxyrhynchus collections, and explains how scholars place manuscripts in the timeline from the late Ptolemaic era to the Roman period. It also uses appendices and reference material to ground its analysis in real specimens.
Ideal for readers with an interest in ancient manuscripts, literary papyri, and the history of Greek writing.

The substance of the following treatise was originally written as a dissertation for the Conington Prize in 1897, and I had at first intended to defer its publication for some time, in view of the accessions of new material which the excavations conducted each year in Egypt are continually bringing to light. It was represented, however (and that by one whose judgement I was bound to respect), that, although the work might gain in absolute accuracy by such a delay, yet its usefulness to students would be greater if it were published now, as enabling them to assimilate the new material for themselves. Consequently it is without any idea of having reached finality, but rather as an assistance to investigation, that this book is now offered to the consideration of students of palaeography. It is, in fact, an essay in the strict sense of the term an attempt to formularize and classify the results of a number of discoveries, most of which have occurred quite recently. Hence, it will be understood, the conclusions stated in it are in many instances only the impressions of a single student of the subject, and do not (as is the case with treatises on the palaeography of vellum manuscripts) express the consensus of opinions of many experts and many ages.

The author explores the history of this writing material, tracing its use from ancient Egypt through its adoption by the Greeks and its eventual decline with the rise of vellum manuscripts. The author not only examines the physical characteristics of papyrus but also delves into the evolution of writing styles across different historical periods. The book considers both non-literary documents, such as contracts and receipts, and literary works, including manuscripts of Homer, Hyperides, and even the lost plays of Euripides.
