It is UB ually the fate of the maker of an anthology t Oplease none of the judicioiis because each is convincedi that his tastu is superior to that of the editor. The. possibility of escaping this fate on the part of the! author of the present volume, which aims at collecting those fragments of the Bong-writera of Greece that have distinctly human interest, is all trjo great: an untoward chance has bequeathed to ua such a meagre portion of the wealth of Greek song that the task of selection is comparatively easy. The triumphal odea of Pindar have indeed been handed down fairly complete and Eire elsewhere accessible. If I have not included all that is best in him, it is because a few of his liner odes are mutilated in iarts beyoni all hope of certain restoration. Of the rest of thi aong-poetiy of Greece only broken columns and mined architraves remain to attest the beauty of the shattered edifice.
