Excerpt from Handbook of British Rubi
As a diligent student of British brambles for nearly a quarter of a century I offer this handbook to my fellow-students, with the hope that they will not think me guilty of great presumption in publishing it. They can hardly be more sensible of its shortcomings than I am. But not a few of them have assured me that I can be of service to them in this way. And so, having ventured on a first 'Essay' in the same direction eight years ago when still less qualified than now, I have been encouraged by the unvarying kindness of my botanical friends and correspondents to do my best in the production of this more complete work. I have myself received such continual pleasure and refreshment from the study that I like to persuade myself that I may help some others not to be discouraged by the initial difficulties.
The industry of our leading batologists since Dr. Focke's visit to England in 1880 has been remarkable. As a natural result a considerable number of additional species and varieties have been published in the London Journal of Botany; while in a great many instances the earlier known forms have gradually become more clearly defined, long-standing misconceptions as to the nomenclature of several have been removed, and great progress made in tracing the distribution of most of them in all parte of the British Isles.
If more work of the same kind is to be done with the least possible loss of time and energy, and so as to produce still more satisfactory results, a handbook recording and systematising the facte already ascertained, and helping students to test them for themselves, seems an essential.
My main object throughout has been to differentiate and define our various forms as briefly as seemed consistent with exactness.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book is a comprehensive handbook for identifying and understanding British brambles and identifying species and varieties of Rubus. Focusing on the structural differences in stem, leaf and flower between these incredibly variable plants, this book is a detailed guide for botanists, horticulturalists and countryside enthusiasts. As well as a detailed look at over 100 different species and varieties of British bramble, the book explores the themes of bramble grouping, nomenclature and distribution. The author includes personal insights and anecdotes on the process of bramble identification, while acknowledging the work of other botanists such as Dr. Focke of Bremen, who, in the late 19th century, initiated a systematic approach to bramble classification that continues today. This insightful book is thorough in its exploration of the complexities of British Rubi enabling students and experienced botanists alike to identify and classify the vast array of species and varieties of Rubus throughout the British Isles. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
