As a dialogue almost of necessity precludes a systematic treatment of the opinions with which it is dealing, some synthetical account of the doctrines of the Brahmans may appear to be a desideratum in the present volume. It was, indeed, a part of my original design to have attempted something of the kind, until upon further thoughts I was induced to abandon this attempt. The complicated nature of the Indian systems prevents their being handled cursorilv ;and the translation of the Vishnu Purana, with the valuable notes attached to it, has rendered them no longer inaccessible to those who wish to see further into them.
