Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book on fox hunting combines personal experience with a historical look at the practice, its social aspects, and the moral questions surrounding it. Published over 40 years after a change in the practice of the sport that saw it transition from its original incarnation as a pursuit of food and vermin control to one of organized recreation, the author takes on questions about the ethics of the sport. He argues that rational creatures with superior intellect should not engage in the persecution of harmless animals for sport, and that doing so is a waste of time that could be better spent doing other, more virtuous, activities. He also argues that fox hunting is harmful to the environment and to the game itself. The author concludes by reflecting that the pursuit of the fox was never so much about the capture of the animal, which was more often than not able to escape a well-mounted hunt, as it was about the sporting experience of the riders, their social interactions, and the physical and mental stimulation that came from spending time in nature.
