The English text derives from this and was produced not long after the middle of the 15th century. The final text differed from its source in amplifying the role of religious piety while also introducing a plethora of minor characters to provide pageantry and support for a variety of tournaments and battles. The romance provided a useful literary template for showcasing the chivalrous qualities of the ideal noble.
