The author, an historian and philosopher, cites dozens of civilizations and empires throughout the book, from ancient Rome to Nazi Germany, whose trajectory appears to confirm this pattern. In each case, civilizations reached their apogee thanks to the mixing of different population groups, which create new, more vigorous peoples. After three centuries, these new peoples tend to reach their maximum power, conquering and expanding over vast stretches of land. They eventually exhaust their strength, recede back to their original geographic footprint, and either amalgamate anew to form another civilization or remain dormant. The book uses this concept to analyze the rise and fall of civilizations, and to speculate on the rise of the United States in the world order, arguing that it has benefited uniquely from a continuous influx of new peoples and ideas. Thus, the US's potential for global influence on the world stage is predicated on its continuing cultural and ethnic diversity.
