Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book is a history of the English Corn Laws, a complex and extensive set of regulations that defined the import and export of corn from the 15th century to the mid-19th century. Far from being simply a matter of wealth and power, the author shows that at the time these laws were conceived, protecting domestic consumption of corn was viewed by government as a paramount responsibility. Indeed, the author posits that economic policy was inextricably tied to social and political policy in this period. As the primary source of sustenance, sudden shifts in the price of corn represented serious threats to the stability of the realm. Therefore, attempts to control and stabilize prices were the central concern of the Corn Laws. This book shows, however, that the interests of producers and consumers were often at odds, and that the Corn Laws were often used to protect the interests of landowners at the expense of other groups. Ultimately, the author argues that the Corn Laws were a product of their time. The book provides a valuable insight into the history of English agriculture and food policy, and its implications for understanding the present day are profound.
