Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book examines the usage of a negative particle with participles in Classical Greek. The particle in question, μὠ, was originally a prohibitive particle with no negative force, rather it conveyed a sense of repulsion or rejection. Over time, however, it came to be used as a negative particle, particularly in the conditional sentence, clauses expressing purpose, and generic relative sentences. The author examines the development of μὠwith the participle and provides numerous examples from the works of major Greek writers such as Homer, Euripides, Sophocles, and Plato. The author's examination shows that the particle μὠ, and the concept of negation it came to represent, became increasingly prevalent in the Greek language over time, reflecting a gradual shift in the way Greek writers expressed ideas of prohibition, purpose, and conditionality.
