Présentation de l'éditeur

William MacCullum Clow was born in 1853 in Glasgow, Scotland. Early on, his family lived in Auckland, New Zealand and he went to school there. But when he was seventeen years old, he and his family were living at 159 North Street, Glasgow, Scotland. His father, Andrew Clow, age 51, was a successful Master Carpenter who had several men in his employ, and his mother, Jane, was a homemaker. He had an older sister and a younger brother. William Clow dedicated his book, “Evangel of the Strait Gate” to his father and to De Witt Clinton Taylor. For “The Cross and Christian Experience” he collected twenty-five of his best sermons on the Cross. Each sermon is well organized with his main points clearly and logically stated. He supported his lessons with an abundance of Holy Scripture and with illustrations from contemporary life, history, literature and works of theology. His book shows how well-read he was in his use of allusions, citations, and references from English and American literature as well as from World literature. He was a highly educated man having received his university education from a prestigious institution. He also studied the Holy Scriptures on his own. From his personal study, he reflected on the things he gleaned from religious books, periodicals, and lectures. He was true to the scriptures and true to the message of the Cross. Upon reading The Cross and Christian Experience” Dr. W. H. Griffith Thomas wrote: “Seldom have I read a fresher or more inspiring volume of sermons, and I frankly confess that when once I started it I could hardly put it down. Mind and heart went out to the author in gratitude, and to God in thankfulness for such truly helpful teaching. ... I make bold to say that if the substance of this book were received and reproduced by the ministry of our Churches it would put iron into our blood, heart into our work, and joy into our people. . . ." Carroll Burcham is from Lubbock, Texas. Retired English teacher from Lubbock Christian University.
