This Treatise is intended to explain the composition and sources of the Catechisms of the Westminster A ssembly, and to give specimens of the Catechisms which were previously in use among the doctrinal Puritans in England and Scotland, as well as of those which were drawn up to be laid before the Assembly s Committee. It is the necessary sequence of the treatises and articles I have already published on the history of the A ssembly, and in explanation of their doctrinal standards. The great mass of the catechetical manuals which had to be consulted in compiling it had to be sought for out of Scotland; and, as it was only at distant intervals I could prosecute my researches in the English Libraries which contained them, the completion of the volume has been delayed much longer than was anticipated when it was first taken in hand.
