The absence of any Australian work of a general nature dealing with the subject of fruitgrowing under irrigation is the authors apology for placing this work before the public. Much of the subject matter of some of the chapters herein dealt with appeared in the form of articles written by the author during the past four years, which were printed in the pages of the Murray Pioneer. It is the authors hope that the following pages may be of some service as a guide to prospective irrigationists or to settlers new to irrigation enterprise, in helping them to acquire the chief principles of Australian irrigation practice, and thus to enable them to avoid the mistakes made by many of the older irrigationists, who, for want of information upon this subject, had often to acquire their irrigation knowledge as the result of painful and costly experience.
