Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book is the first volume of a biography in three volumes on Edward Bouverie Pusey, an influential figure in the Oxford Movement and the Church of England. The author's meticulous research gives the reader a deeply contextualised understanding of Pusey's life and times. While Pusey is the central focus, the biography also contributes to the wider histories of Oxford University, theological debate, and the social and religious landscape of nineteenth-century Britain. The first volume takes us from Pusey's birth in 1800 to his ordination in 1828. It charts his elite Protestant heritage and privileged upbringing, his deep piety from a young age, his character as a diligent and serious scholar, and explores the deep depression that led him to abandon his plans for marriage in his early twenties. Despite this personal suffering, Pusey's intellectual life grew and blossomed at Christ Church, Oxford, where he excelled in his studies, made lifelong friendships, and immersed himself in the study of German theology.
