This book is a compilation of detailed studies conducted at the Johns Hopkins Demonstration School, a summer program for children who had failed to advance to the next grade during the previous academic year. The author, an educational and experimental psychologist, studies the mental and physical development of 129 students in six different grade levels through a variety of tests, measurements, and scales, some of which the author created. In analyzing the results, the author reveals that while the students made improvements over the course of the program, they still fell below national norms, and that existing grading scales for determining intellectual ability may not be as useful for older children. The research presented in this book not only provides a wealth of specific data on the physical and intellectual development of school-aged children, but also offers valuable insights into how educational institutions can better measure and accommodate students' progress and needs.
