Monetary Question, when really all parties have been heard, and all the pros and cons of the case submitted to endless discussions on both sides, the value of a new book on the subject may appear doubtful indeed. Nor is it my intention in the least to revive the ubattle of standards which, besides, for me has been lost entirely for silver, since the time the United States have signally failed to contribute to any extent to the rehabilitation of the white metal, while these enormous purchases have even not prevented a further depreciation unheard of in the monetary history of our times. From that moment all my attention has been turned to gold, which under the circumstances can alone in future form the metal for good and honest money.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book sets out to explore the monetary questions of the day, a subject the author believes should not be approached or discussed except after the study of the facts and the relations between them. Gold is the first metal examined, followed by silver. The author notes that a significant decline in the price of silver occurred over the past few years, which had been attributed by some to a scramble for gold by various nations. However, the author argues that every nation wanting gold has been able to obtain it, and that there is actually enough gold available to satisfy the wants of all leading nations. The author goes on to discuss the future of silver, arguing that its future is dark and that it will be phased out in favor of gold. Despite there being enormous absorption of silver from China and India in 1890, this did not translate to a rise in the price of the metal as might have been expected. The author predicts that the price of silver will decline even further and that it will become worthless as money. This prediction is based on the fact that the production of silver has nearly doubled over the past fourteen years, and that there are indications that this increase will continue. The author concludes by discussing the possibility of India introducing a gold standard, or suspending the coinage of silver for private parties. Either of these measures would be detrimental to the future of silver, the author argues.
