This book delves into the historical and geographical dimensions of a prevalent childhood ailment, meticulously examining its impact on individuals and communities. The author contends that this condition, often associated with densely populated industrial centres and colder climates, has significantly influenced the trajectory of public health throughout history. The narrative takes readers on a journey through time, exploring the ailment's presence in various regions, from ancient civilizations to 17th-century England and beyond. It challenges the notion that the disease is solely a consequence of civilization, highlighting its absence in early societies like Egypt and India. Instead, the author posits that factors such as climate, urbanization, and industrialization play crucial roles in its emergence and spread. The book delves into the socioeconomic conditions that contribute to the disease, particularly focusing on inadequate housing, overcrowding, and limited access to sunlight. It sheds light on the stark disparities in child mortality rates between affluent and impoverished areas, underscoring the urgent need for improved living conditions and public health interventions.
