This book, an exploration of the Preparation for Christ in the Old Testament, discusses the ancient religious education of young people in biblical times as they transitioned from Sunday School to the next stage of their Christian learning. Emphasized in this insightful text is the central role of the Bible Class as the immediate next step in their spiritual training and discusses different methods for teaching the main ground of essential Christian instruction over a four-year program. The author divides this instruction into the following subjects: The Preparation for Christ in the Old Testament; The Life and Teaching of Jesus Christ; The Growth of the Church; and Christian Faith and Practice. The text includes daily Scripture lectionary suggestions to initiate the habit of daily Bible reading for the young people, as well as references to other useful literature, such as a small teacher's booklet and a corresponding booklet for the use of the pupils. The most important element of Bible study, the author believes, is that the teacher regards the Bible Class as a religious discipline in which the young people are consciously led into Christian discipleship and into wholehearted and intelligent membership of the Church of Christ. Thus, the four-years course will be linked with the Young Communicants Class so that at any point, it might be natural for young people to feel that they wish to come forward for communicant membership.
