This volume does not contain a systematic treatment of its large subject. I have sought to indicate its charac ter in the subtitle. I am indebted to the editors Of The International Journal of Ethics, The Open Court, and The North American Review for permission to make use of mate rial first published in these periodicals. Parts of the fourth and sixth essays were first published in The International Journal of Ethics, parts Of the first and fifth in The Open Court, and a few sentences from the third in The North American Review.
