Synopsis

Discover a sweeping portrait of the Aegean, told with clear travel detail and historical insight.

This guide blends scenery, ruins, and living culture to invite your own voyage.

The Islands of the Aegean collects Edwardian-era travel sketches and observations on Delos, Rheneia, Patmos, and beyond. Written by Henry Fanshawe Tozer, the work frames a voyage through a cluster of islands famed for their ancient sites, volcanic landscapes, and enduring monasteries. The narrative emphasizes general impressions and notable points of interest over exhaustive archaeology, offering readers a practical sense of how the archipelago looked, felt, and sounded during Tozer’s journeys.

Readers will move with the author from sea routes to shore, encountering map-guided passages, descriptions of church interiors and cave spaces, and glimpses of island life, from sponge fishing to monastic life. The tone remains accessible and reflective, balancing travel detail with historical and cultural context across multiple islands in the Aegean sea.

  • Vivid travel scenes that bring ports, capes, and hill towns to life.
  • Accessible notes on ancient sites, monasteries, and legendary events.
  • Context on geography, local customs, and the changing face of the islands.
  • Maps and landscape descriptions to complement the narrative journey.

Ideal for readers of classic travel writing and historical impressions, seeking a thoughtful introduction to the islands from Delos to Patmos.

Présentation de l'éditeur

The present work does not profess to be more than a sketch of the subject with which it deals. For fuller information the reader is referred to such comprehensive works as Ross s Reisen auf den griechtschen I nseln, Pashley s Travels in Crete, Conze s Reise auf den I nseln des Thrakischen Meeres, and Mr. Bent s The Cyclades. These (with the exception of the last-named, which was not published when I visited the central islands) were the constant companions of my journeys, and I take this opportunity of acknowledging the service which they have rendered me, both as a source of information in travelling, and as an aid in compiling this book. The three journeys which are here described were undertaken at considerable intervals, but no great changes have taken place in those regions since the first was made.
