From barter to coinage: how money changed the world.
This Cambridge edition of The Evolution of Coinage guides readers through the dawn of money, the rise of precious metals, and the birth of stamped coins. It explains how societies moved from barter to standardized pieces of metal, and how merchants, weights, and marks shaped early economies.
The book traces the journey from primitive measures of value to durable, portable currency. It discusses electrum coins minted around 700 B.C. in Asia Minor, the role of Greek and Lydian innovations, and the way official seals and marks guaranteed weight and quality. You’ll see how coin designs evolved from heraldic and religious symbols to portraiture of rulers as states grew more centralized.Les informations fournies dans la section « Synopsis » peuvent faire référence à une autre édition de ce titre.

Barter is, of course, the simplest and the most direct of the ways in which goods can pass from one man to another on the basis of a bargain. But barter is at the best a mere temporary expedient. So soon as the most rudimentary stage in the evolution of a community is past, so soon does the primitive process reveal itse Uas cumbrous and unpractical. However narrow the limits of a district, however small the population of a village, those mutual wants by which the necessity for exchange is conditioned, are bound to make themselves felt at different times and seasons; the odds are all against the tailor being down at heel at the exact moment when the shoemaker is out at elbow. Hence the speedy adoption of some article as a convenient measure of the value of the various commodities.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book investigates the evolution of coinage by exploring aspects of its production and use from the very beginning through to the establishment of monometallic systems in Greece. The author traces the origins of coinage to electrum, a natural alloy of gold and silver that was widely available in Asia Minor and eventually led to separate minting of the two constituent precious metals. The work examines the varied systems of coinage in antiquity, the evolution of centralized systems for minting and distribution of coins, and the crucial importance of state intervention in maintaining the integrity of coinage as a medium of exchange. The author demonstrates how the availability of abundant supplies of gold and silver in Persia led to a stable bimetallic currency and the dominance of gold coinage, particularly the daric, in international trade. However, in Greece proper, a monometallic silver currency prevailed for centuries, supplemented by gold coinage from external sources to meet the needs of large transactions. The book concludes by discussing the drawbacks of a silver-only currency and the eventual adoption of gold coinage in many Greek cities during the fourth century BC, as well as the use of small denominations to facilitate everyday transactions.
