Synopsis

A classic, experiment-based look at how ideas, attention, and meaning are studied under careful observation.

This work surveys how thoughts arise, how we attend to things, and how meaning is formed. It foregrounds kinaesthetic sensation, verbal and imaginal processes, and the body’s role in conscious experience. The author argues for an experimental psychology of thought and discusses the limits of introspection, imagining how meaning can be carried by organic attitudes, imagery, and even physiological states.

Readers will encounter discussions of perception, memory, judgment, language, and the nature of meaning itself. The text situates the study of thought within a broader history of psychological theories, while emphasizing concrete methods and observable phenomena in controlled settings.

  • Explains how meaning can arise from kinaesthetic, imaginal, and verbal processes.
  • Explores organic attitudes and their role in conscious experience and attention.
  • Considers the limits of introspection and the experimental status of different distinctions in thought.
  • Addresses how perception, memory, judgment, and language relate to the study of thinking.

Ideal for readers seeking a rigorous, historical perspective on the experimental study of thought and meaning.

Présentation de l'éditeur

Feeling and A ttention, published last year, I remarked that the system of psychology rests upon a threefold foundation: the doctrine of sensation and image, the elementary doctrine of feeling, and the doctrine of attention. This statement, which formed the basis of my whole discussion, was promptly challenged by reviewers. I was misled, they affirmed, by a sensationalists bias; I should have taken account of current experimental work upon the thoughtprocesses; I had no right to assume that all intellection is imaginal in character. I could not but acknowledge the essential justice of this criticism, although I could not either accept my critics point of view. I was, indeed, engaged in writing a brief defence of psychological sensationalism, when I received an invitation to deliver a series of lectures at the University of I llinois. Here was an opportunity, of which I gladly availed myself, to treat in some little detail of the recent experimental contributions to the psychology of thought. The present volume is the result.

Présentation de l'éditeur

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.
