Explore the geometry of a spinning top through elliptic curves, geometry, and motion
This book offers a unified geometric and analytic view of rigid-body rotation around a fixed point. It introduces fresh ways to describe the top’s motion, using new parameters that highlight the role of gravity and symmetry in dynamics. The text blends visuals and formulas to show how rotation can be understood with geometric objects like polhodes and herpolhodes, and how these curves relate to well-known motions. It connects classical ideas with modern concepts such as elliptic functions and automorphic functions, offering a cohesive path from basic setup to advanced representations.

My object in presenting it, however, is more general than that of throwing light on a particular class of problems in dynamics. I wish by an illustration which may fairly be regarded as representative to make evident the advantage which is to be gained by dynamics and astronomical and physical science in general from a more intimate association with the modern pure mathematics, the theory of functions especially. I venture to hope, therefore, that my lectures may interest engineers, physicists, and astronomers as well as mathematicians.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book offers a novel approach to understanding the complex world of dynamics, specifically the motion of a top, by drawing on the powerful tools of the theory of functions of a complex variable. The author masterfully weaves together geometry and dynamics, exploring how the motion of a rotating body can be represented through the lens of complex parameters and their transformations. The work builds upon the foundational contributions of Lagrange and Jacobi, showcasing how the introduction of elliptic functions and, importantly, the authorââ â¢s innovative use of Riemannââ â¢s theory of conformal representation, can illuminate the intricate relationship between time and the topââ â¢s motion in unprecedented ways. The authorââ â¢s exploration of the topââ â¢s motion within the context of non-Euclidean geometry reveals deeper insights into the nature of its movement and provides a more comprehensive and elegant framework for understanding this classic dynamical problem. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
