Synopsis

What makes music truly beautiful isn’t the feelings it stirs, but the way its sounds are built.

This classic work explores how beauty in music arises from its own structures, not from external ideas or mere emotional representation. It argues for an objective standard of musical beauty and shows how themes, form, and development drive our experience of a composition.

In thoughtful, accessibly written chapters, Hanslick contrasts music with language, mathematics, and the visual arts to reveal what is unique about musical beauty. He explains how a thème functions as the true core of a piece, and how form and substance inseparably shape each other. The book also addresses common myths about music’s purpose, offering a clear, practical framework for listening with a musician’s ear.
What you’ll experience
  • A clear distinction between musical form and subject, and how they interplay
  • A practical framework for evaluating beauty in a composition
  • Explanations of why music’s value goes beyond feelings or narrative
  • A historical perspective on debates about what music can and should express
Ideal for readers of music theory, aesthetics, and anyone curious about what makes music beautiful.

Présentation de l'éditeur

Excerpt from The Beautiful in Music: A Contribution to the Revisal of Musical Aesthetics

If I have ventured to translate Dr. Eduard Hanslick's "Vom Musikalisch-Schonen," I have done so with a full knowledge of the shortcomings which every translation must present, and especially one like this, the original of which is so inimitable in style and so thoroughly German in construction, that even far more competent writers than myself would find it difficult, if not impossible, to do complete justice to it. My excuse for undertaking so arduous a task must be the desire to introduce to the English reader one of the most remarkable books on musical æsthetics, and one which has deservedly gained a wide reputation among the German-speaking communities. The work is not of recent date, the first edition having appeared close on forty years ago; yet, as is the case with all works dealing with principles and not with questions of local or contemporary interest, the fact of its age in no way detracts from its importance. In conclusion, I may say that I have not aimed so much at perfection in style as at reflecting with fidelity the mind and spirit of the author.
