Sir Benjamin Browne, the following thirty-two have been selected as the most useful h2 and characteristic. While many existed only in manuscript or in the fugitive form of letters or articles to daily papers, some have already appeared in magazines, and for leave to reprint these, we desire to express our thanks to the Editors of the National Review, the Times and the Engineer, and at the same time to offer our apologies if we have in any instance failed to ask permission. Sir Benjamin Browne felt strongly that when the great underlying principles of life had once been discerned, they could be applied to politics, industrial questions, and private conduct alike. These were the permanent Form, into which could be moulded the material of each days events as they arose. This necessarily involved a certain amount of repetition in his writings, because, in discussing different questions before different listeners, or in approaching them from different standpoints, he came back again Oand again to these underlying principles, and drove them home Sby reiterated blows. Reading through his scattered writings is like listening to a sonata where three or four leading themes cj dominate the music, emerging repeatedly in varying keys, and C3 giving coherence to the whole. The dates when the various papers were written must of course be borne in mind, as some of the statistics, accurate at the time, may have altered. The date of each paper is printed at the head of the page. From the historic point of view, they show the consistent evolution of his opinions. One good result of this disastrous war may be that all classes of the nation, with conscience aroused, may attack the problems of Sthe industrial world in a better spirit.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book is a collection of 32 papers by British civil engineer, industrialist, and social commentator Sir Benjamin Browne. Selected from among many, the papers were edited by his daughters E.M.B. and H.M.B. to reflect the author's most important and characteristic writings. As a deputy lieutenant for the county of Northumberland, Browne felt strongly about social and economic issues. He argued that there was a demonstrable relationship between high unemployment and social unrest. At a time of heightened tensions between employers and employees, he called for the creation of labor policies rooted in fairness, with proper regard to the genuine needs of working people. Emphasizing the value of education in the workplace, he stresses the responsibility of employers to provide opportunities for their workers to gain new skills that would increase their earning potential. Browne also believed that employers must be ever mindful of the human cost of their decisions and constantly seek better and more humane ways to run their businesses. Browne's concern for the welfare of others did not stop at the factory gates. As an active member of his community, he served on a number of boards dedicated to the support of the poor and underprivileged. This book shows the scope of Browne's interests as he wrestled with the social and economic questions of his day. Readers will find much of value in his observations and insights, particularly his belief that companies have a moral obligation to the employees who make their success possible.
