Beginning with his birth, the author chronicles Sprague's life from his early childhood to his passing in 1915. The author highlights how, despite losing his father to murder, Sprague became a wealthy mill owner, and how he used his fortune to organize the Rhode Island militia. At the outset of the Civil War, Sprague commanded the stateâs First Volunteer Regiment, making him the first to formally volunteer in the conflict. This book provides important historical value, particularly concerning the Loyal War Governors Conference held in Altoona, Pennsylvania, in 1862. Sprague was not only one of the attendees, but was also one of the main figures involved in its inception. The author argues that the conference was a decisive moment that rallied the nation and ultimately contributed to the Union victory in the war.
