A sharp, character-driven tale of marriage, power, and a Southern town scarred by war. In this vivid novel, a wary widow and a poised suitor navigate social expectations, love, and money in a community still fixing its past.
Set in Valhalla, a town born of war and loss, the book follows Olive Arms and her quiet, imposing son John as they confront marriage, class, and desire. Through brisk dialogue and a keen eye for mood, the story examines how people perform, inhabit, and redefine themselves within a fragile social order.
- A portrait of a postwar Southern town marked by memory, pride, and poverty.
- A married woman’s inner life and the social pressures surrounding courtship and fidelity.
- The clash between appearances and true motive, as characters test ambition, restraint, and vulnerability.
- Rich, character-driven prose that blends social satire with intimate, tense moments.
Ideal for readers who enjoy literary fiction that probes gender roles, destiny, and the complicated pull of loyalty in a changing era.

South was a feudal civilisation which produced beautiful women, brilliant orators, and valuable slaves, and when the Southern Literary Messenger published continued poems of fifty thousand words which were eagerly read by the beautiful women and the brilliant ora tors, Colonel Phillip A rms, from Virginia, moved to Cherokee, Georgia, and established his dynasty there. He brought with him the proverbial hun dred slaves. Shortly afterward other Virginians came with their retinues and wealth. They were in the nature of courtiers to Colonel A rms, and they were prevailed upon to follow him by the fact that the Colonel had discovered in the land iron ore which was even more valuable than Virginia

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book is a pre-World War I novel centered around the residents of fading antebellum town, Valhalla, Georgia, where aristocratic ideals from the past clash with the harsher realities of the present. The main character is John Arms, the town's most distinguished resident, who has never accomplished anything commensurate with his aristocratic appearance. As the story progresses, the author delves into the psychological motivations, cultural norms, and life experiences of the characters, especially as it pertains to relationships between men and women. The novel is a thoughtful exploration of the complexities of those relationships and the unspoken struggles people navigate in their pursuit of love and fulfillment in a tumultuous society, exploring such themes as class, gender, and the nature of freedom and autonomy. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
