How the modern novel found its voice. The Evolution of the English Novel by Francis Hovey Stoddard traces how a form once focused on external scenes and social types grew into a powerful instrument for exploring life as it is lived. It argues that the novel became a primary critic of life, turning to the inner world and everyday experience to tell deeper stories.
The book surveys the history of the English novel, linking its progress to cultural shifts, including the rise of scientific thinking, changes in education, and evolving ideas about individuality. It outlines major forms—from historical novels to novels of purpose and the romantic novel—showing how writers moved from simple narration to nuanced investigations of character, motive, and society.
Ideal for readers of literary history, students, and anyone curious about how fiction evolved to reflect real human lives.

In every discussion of tendencies the term evolution claims a place with almost the insistence of a prescriptive right. No other term localizes the phenomena so definitely, and conveys so promptly the notion of progress in a general line of tendency. Nevertheless, I think most of us would, if we could, rather avoid the term than insist upon it in literary discussion. For the use of the word evolution seems to involve a very elaborate theory.
