The task, however, was initiated, not deliberately, nor aggressively and by way of challenge to the confident agnosticism of contemporary opinion. In a sense, it can hardly be said to have been voluntarily undertaken at all. Casually introduced to the notice of the writer, at an age when his mind must have been peculiarly susceptible to their significance, the Enneads of PJ otinus, as presented in the excellent French version of Bouillet,1 took such a grip upon his imagination that for many months they seemed to have translated him bodily to the shining sphere of supersensual experi1 To which and its voluminous commentary I hereby acknowledge my debt.
