Synopsis

In Morale and Its Enemies, William Ernest Hocking examines how morale shapes war and peace—and why it matters to every reader. This book analyzes the inner forces that drive soldiers and nations, showing how the will to endure can be as decisive as weapons. It also examines the complex links between battlefield experience and civilian life, and what keeps a community from breaking under stress.

The author draws on wartime observations to explain how morale emerges from the needs, fears, and hopes of people under pressure. He argues that morale is a practical thing, not just a feeling, and that its proper understanding can help both soldiers and civilians face long, difficult conflicts without losing sight of shared humanity.

- Understand how morale is built and sustained in tough times
- See how soldiers and civilians influence each other during war
- Learn how individual character and collective purpose interact under stress
- Explore the long-term effects of war on minds, loyalties, and societies

Ideal for readers of military history, philosophy, and psychology who want a clear, thoughtful look at what keeps people going when everything is on the line.

Présentation de l'éditeur

Paa de Calais, through Tillages black as the night itself, except for a stealthy chink of light here and there in the crack of a window, past trains of loaded lorries, detachments of soldiers and workmen, toward the front. At one high point of the road with a clearing toward the north and east we saw the night sky broken by sudden flares and dangling signal-lights faint in the distance :there was the cockpit; there the man-power of great nations was straining in mud and rain against all the devices the brain of a cunning enemy could bring to crush its life and spirit and endurance. The wiU-to-I ive of the nations was in those tortured bodies. If there were any super-men in the world during the first years of the war, they were not among those who went out confident in all the freight of German war-lore and munitions, but among those who withstood them. During the days that followed, we were with these men, in the billets, in the trenches at Croisilles, at training camp, at hospital. Prom Kemmel Hill, we followed as best we could, their deadly labors on the earth and in the air, in the region of Wipers, Westhoek, and Messines. Later on, with another group, we met po Uus of France, at home, if you like, in their own war zone, in the devastated regions about Chauny, in the active sectors about Soisso Mand the Chemin des Dames. They were all men without visible haloes, for the most part tired, determined, matter-of-fact men, unconscious of either greatness or special virtue other than that of having chosen, in a mortal crisis, as men must.

Présentation de l'éditeur

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.
