If FieldJD ga statement made in the preface to one of his books be true, to wit: When the public takes you up you may safely bid defiance to the critics, then my reason for publishing a second edition of these poems needs no urging. Not that the crit Jca have mistreated my verses; quite the contrary. They have been so uniformly mild and civil in their criticism of the work as to prove almost disappointing. Having delayed this second publication far tieyond the complete exiiaustion of the first edition, which much to my surprise) yielded me a very substantial and satisfactory profit, IE nd myself unable to fill the orders that continue to come to me. These orders arriving at not infrequent intervals and from various and widely separate sources have caused me to take it for granted that the public values the poems enough to warrant another edition with some added texpected to offer a ket, if 0-- --- bedience to the law of supply and demand. Since the publication of the former edition she whose untiring devotion made that first volume possible has passed mto the larger life beyond. Constantly missing the hand that ministered unto me so unceasingly in those days of uninterrupted peace, and looking ever back with uncomplaining regret to the simple yet fruitful life we lived together in that ideal home, I nevertheless feel that she is not gone from me. As I write these words her confident assurance that she wonld be with tne in the spirit more than had been possible in the flesh conies to me like the voice of inspiration, and I know that siie still ministers unto me in the highest. And so, in the presence of this serene spirit that seems to rejoice with a great joy in the present fruition of its fondest hope and most untiring service, I dedicate this second edition of my poems to her whose memory shall always be to me like the perfume of a sweet unfading flower.
