This book is a collection of letters from a Unionist who fears the disintegration of the United Kingdom due to the rise of Irish nationalism and the demand for home rule for Ireland. The author argues that the concessions offered by Gladstone to appease Irish nationalism do not go far enough and will lead to a loss of British sovereignty over Ireland, replacing it with an ineffective compromise. Further, the author claims that while home rule will not satisfy Irish demands for independence, it will lead to dual control and administrative chaos in Ireland. The author further argues that federalism, where Ireland would essentially be an autonomous state within the UK, is even more dangerous to the UK than full independence for Ireland, as federalism undermines the sovereignty of Parliament and the unity of the British nation. The author concludes that home rule will not bring peace and quiet for England as promised by its supporters, but more conflict and turmoil, and that the only true way to address Irish grievances is through local self-government, which will address their concerns while preserving the integrity of the United Kingdom.
