While on a hunting trip, Ashton is mistaken for a rustler and is confronted by a group of cowboys. In an attempt to escape, he shoots and wounds one of the cowboys, leading to a tense standoff. The tension ratchets up as the cowboys, led by the stoic Knowles and the hot-headed Gowan, demand payment for the injured cowboy and the slain calf that Ashton had mistaken for a deer. Ashton reveals that he is broke, having been robbed by his own valet and guide, and the situation seems dire. As the standoff continues, a young woman named Isobel Knowles arrives on the scene. She is the adopted daughter of Knowles and is intrigued by Ashton's predicament. Despite her initial skepticism, Isobel starts to see a different side to Ashton and offers her help. The novel explores themes of masculinity, justice, and the complexities of human nature, particularly the capacity for both good and evil that exists within us all.
