As it was considered useful to give a treatise on Faith as an introduction to The Creed Explained and a treatise on Law to The Commandments Explained, I have written as an introduction to the present volume a treatise on Grace. The first 97 pages of this work are devoted to an explanation of the Catholic doctrine of Grace. In the spiritual life there is no new plan to suggest as to the essential means of conversion and of sanctification. The one essential means is, as we know, the grace of God. The Reformers of the sixteenth century taught numerous errors on the subjects of justification and grace, and the Church of England has continued to the present day in error on these subjects. No one section or school of that body can be said to have correct Catholic knowledge as to the doctrine of justification and grace, and this is true even of the highest of the High Church party, who pretend that nothing separates them from the Church of Rome but the Petrine claims. The whole sum of Christianity may be comprehended in two things, namely, in knowledge and in obedience. The one is conversant about things supernaturally revealed or inspired, the other about duties to be supernaturally performed.
